Victorians urged: don’t be complacent about corruption

Victorians who suspect or have witnessed corrupt activity are encouraged to speak up and make a report, joining people across the world to take a stand against corruption in support of International Anti-Corruption Day.

Recent research published by the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) shows that corruption and its prevention are generally not on the radar of Victorian Public Sector agencies. The research also shows that:

  • most agencies reporting systems or complaints mechanisms only related to suspected fraud rather than the wider issue of suspected corruption
  • few agencies report having specific anti-corruption risk assessment processes
  • few agencies have specific education or training programs for staff about corruption risks.

CEO Alistair Maclean said public sector workers and members of the community are the ’eyes and ears’ which help IBAC investigate and prevent corruption in Victoria.

“By its nature, corruption is secretive and therefore difficult to detect. We rely on people coming forward with information to help us detect and expose significant corrupt activity and risks within the public sector,” Mr Maclean said.

“If you suspect corruption in the Victorian public sector, please report it to us. Chances are you’re not the only person who has concerns.”

You can make a complaint about corruption in the Victorian public sector to IBAC by using our secure online form or by downloading our complaints form and sending it back to us by post or email. You can also make a complaint to IBAC about the misconduct of police.
