IBAC Commissioner calls for reporting of corruption on International Anti-corruption Day

On International Anti-corruption Day, Victoria’s IBAC Commissioner, Stephen O’Bryan QC calls on all Victorians to be united against public sector corruption, and when they see it, to report it.

Mr O’Bryan announced today, IBAC is commencing a community education campaign next week to help Victorians to identify and report public sector corruption.

“Victorians expect their public sector employees to do the right thing and to uphold the required standards of conduct and integrity in delivering important government services.”

“As Victorians, we pride ourselves on taking integrity and corruption prevention seriously, and as citizens we are rightly concerned whenever corruption in our public sector is exposed.”

IBAC’s When something’s not right, report it campaign will be supported with print, radio and online information that will help improve community understanding of what public sector corruption is and encourage Victorians to report it in complete confidence to IBAC.

“It’s important to remember that any public sector corruption is not a victimless crime. It has an adverse impact on all Victorians by depriving the state of tax dollars that would have otherwise been used to run our schools, hospitals, transport and other vital public services.”

For this reason it’s incumbent on everyone to report corruption when they see it, Mr O’Bryan said.

“IBAC is focused on preventing and exposing public sector corruption in Victoria, but we cannot do this alone. It’s timely, on International Anti-corruption Day, to call on all Victorians to be united against corruption and to speak up and report suspected corruption in our state government agencies, police and local councils,” Mr O’Bryan said.

People can report corruption and police misconduct, in confidence to IBAC."
